What lash extensions style for hooded eyes?
If you have hooded eyes and you've been putting off getting lash extensions because you're not sure they'll work for you, I want to reassure you right now. Hooded eyes are actually one of my favourite eye shapes to work with. When the right style is chosen and the lashes are mapped correctly to your face, the results can be genuinely transformative.
The problem is that a lot of people with hooded eyes have had extensions before and been disappointed. The lashes felt heavy, or they brushed against the skin above, or the set just didn't open the eye the way they hoped. That's not a hooded eye problem. That's a technique problem. And it's completely avoidable.
Let me explain what actually works.
First, what are hooded eyes?
Hooded eyes have a fold of skin that sits lower over the crease, which can make the lid appear smaller or partially hidden when your eyes are open. It's an incredibly common eye shape and it's completely natural. Lots of people have always had it, and for others it becomes more pronounced with age.
The reason it matters for lash extensions is that the wrong style, applied without proper thought, can make hooded eyes look smaller and heavier rather than more open and lifted. A good lash technician knows this going in and plans accordingly.
What styles tend to work best
Length and curl are everything
For hooded eyes, a stronger curl is usually your best friend. A curl that lifts the lash upward rather than fanning it outward helps create the illusion of a more open, lifted eye. Styles that project forward rather than up can disappear under the hood and end up sitting against the skin, which is uncomfortable and unflattering.
Length needs to be considered carefully too. Going too long can weigh the lash down and actually make the hood more obvious. A more moderate length with the right curl will nearly always look better than something dramatic that drags the eye downward.
Mapping matters more than the style name
Here's something I really want people to understand. The named styles you see on treatment menus, cat eye, doll eye, natural, wispy, these are starting points, not fixed rules. What actually makes lash extensions look incredible on any eye shape is the mapping. That means deciding where the longer lashes sit, where the shorter ones go, and how the whole set works in relation to your specific eye shape and facial features.
For hooded eyes specifically, placing the longest lashes in the right zone can lift and elongate the eye beautifully. Get that mapping wrong and even the most expensive set will fall flat.
Why I created my Signature Set
This is exactly why I developed my Signature Set at Mali Beauty. Rather than picking a style off a menu and applying it the same way to every client, my Signature Set is built entirely around facial mapping. I look at your eye shape, your face, your features, and I design a set specifically for you.
For clients with hooded eyes this makes an enormous difference. Instead of working from a template, I'm working from your face. The result is lashes that genuinely suit you rather than lashes that were designed for someone else.
It's the treatment I'm most proud of, and honestly it's the one I'd recommend to anyone who has ever felt like lash extensions didn't quite work for them before.
What to expect at your appointment
When you come to see me at my studio inside Bodiology Sussex on South Street in Eastbourne, we start with a proper consultation. I'll look at your eye shape, talk through what you're hoping to achieve, and map out what I think will work best for you before a single lash goes on.
If you have hooded eyes and you've had a disappointing experience elsewhere, please tell me. It genuinely helps me understand what hasn't worked before so I can make sure this time is different.
The short answer
Hooded eyes absolutely can wear lash extensions beautifully. The key is working with a technician who understands facial mapping and takes the time to design a set around your specific features rather than applying a one size fits all style.
If you're in or around Eastbourne and you'd like to find out what the right set looks like for you, come and have a chat. I'd love to show you what's possible.
