Can lash extensions cause blindness?
If you've typed this question into Google, first of all, I'm really glad you're doing your research. It tells me you're someone who thinks carefully before booking a treatment, and honestly that's exactly the kind of client I love working with.
So let me answer this properly. Calmly, honestly, and without either dismissing your concern or catastrophising it.
The short answer#
In the hands of a qualified, experienced technician using professional grade products, lash extensions do not cause blindness. There are no documented cases of lash extensions causing permanent vision loss when applied correctly.
But there is a longer answer, and it's worth understanding.
Why people ask this question
Lash extensions involve working extremely close to the eyes. Adhesive is involved. Tools are involved. It makes complete sense that people want to know whether something could go wrong, and what that might look like.
The concern usually comes from one of two places. Either someone has read a scary story online, or they've had a reaction after a previous treatment and are worried about what it means. Both are completely valid reasons to want more information before you book.
What the actual risks are
Adhesive fumes and sensitivity
Lash adhesive contains cyanoacrylate, which produces fumes during application. For most people this causes no issue at all. For some, particularly those with sensitive eyes or certain allergies, it can cause temporary irritation, watering, or redness during or after the appointment.
This is why your eyes should be kept closed throughout the entire treatment. A good technician will make sure of this and will work in a well ventilated space. The irritation, if it occurs, is temporary and resolves on its own.
Allergic reactions
A small number of people are allergic to the ingredients in lash adhesive. A reaction can cause swelling, redness, and discomfort around the eye area. It is uncomfortable and it needs to be taken seriously, but it is not the same as a risk to your vision. If you have a history of skin or eye allergies, always mention this before your appointment. A patch test can be done in advance to check your sensitivity.
Infections
Poor hygiene during application is where things can go more seriously wrong. If tools are not properly sanitised, or if products are shared between clients, there is a risk of bacterial or viral infection. This is why choosing a qualified technician who follows proper hygiene protocols is so important. It is not something you should have to think about, but it is something worth asking about if you're unsure.
Damage to natural lashes
This is actually the most common issue I see from poor lash work, and while it's not a vision risk it is worth mentioning. Lashes applied with too much weight, or without proper isolation, can cause traction on the natural lash and lead to breakage or in more serious cases temporary thinning. Again, this comes down to technique and the skill of your technician.
What I do to keep you safe
Every client who comes to see me at Mali Beauty goes through a consultation before we start. I ask about allergies, sensitivities, previous reactions, and any eye conditions. If anything gives me pause, we talk it through before a single lash goes on.
I use professional grade products, I work in a clean and properly ventilated studio, and I follow strict hygiene protocols at every appointment. These aren't extras. They're the baseline of what a qualified technician should be doing as a matter of course.
My studio is inside Bodiology Sussex on South Street in Eastbourne, and if you have any concerns before your first appointment please do get in touch beforehand. There is no such thing as a silly question when it comes to something this close to your eyes, and I would much rather answer your questions in advance than have you lying there worrying throughout your treatment.
The bottom line
Lash extensions, applied by a qualified and experienced technician using professional products and proper hygiene, carry a very low risk profile. The risks that do exist are manageable, largely temporary, and significantly reduced when you choose the right person to do them.
Do your research, ask questions, and trust your instincts when you meet your technician. If something doesn't feel right, it's always okay to walk away.
You deserve to feel completely safe and completely comfortable. That's what I aim for with every single client.
